Furniture Buying Tips To Get The Best Pieces
With all the new shows on TV, and even channels dedicated only to home decor and do-it-yourself renovations in Paris, we are all looking to beautify our homes. That said, many of us are looking to purchase new furniture pieces. But, buying furniture is not as simple as one may think. Use furniture buying tips to get the best pieces for your buck.
Many people are deceived by the marketing gurus that steal a look from a more expensive piece of furniture and sell it for much less than the original. For example, one sofa, that is identical, may be more expensive at one store than at its competitor. Perhaps you believe that you have stumbled upon a deal, which is not impossible, as that can be the case. But, just because one product looks like another, it doesn’t mean that it is identical.
Although the finished product, the style, the color, etc. May all the same, you may find by closely investigating that it is completely different. There is much that goes into a couch. More often than not, what cannot be seen is what will determine the quality of such a piece. It is the inner construction of the cushioning that will determine its quality.
For example, directly beneath the upholstery fabric should be a layer of muslin, which sits above a layer of cotton, then the stuffing, then a sheet of burlap, followed by the springs and webbing at the very bottom. The frames of upholstery pieces should show no warping and all joints should be corner blocked and screwed, not nailed.
For wood furniture, like chairs for example, there are many tests to see the quality of its construction. To begin with, give it a little push see if it tilts or wobbles at all. Ensure there are no gaps between any of the wooden joints. Again, nails should not be used in the construction of the chair, therefore, you should ensure that there are screws with washers. Check that the surface finish has no streaking or bubbles. Corner blocks should be used on chair seats for strength.
Don’t be afraid to inspect the chair from every angle, including its underside. Furthermore, the chair seats or chair pads that you choose should be given much consideration, with regards to their use. If these pieces will be used on a daily basis, ensure you choose a durable fabric that is easy to clean, especially if you have children.
With regards to tables, it is important to determine its function as well, i. E., how often it will be used and who will be using it. From there, you can choose a particular style, material and finish. Here too, it is important to check the construction of the piece from every single angle, including the underside. Lean on it to see if it wobbles, which will be an indication of its instability, and poorer quality.
Ensure that the finish is completely smooth, and that wood matches throughout the entire tabletop. If there is an apron around the table, make sure that the leaf (if there is one) also has an apron. With dining tables and any other type of table that may be equipped with a metal mechanism, make sure that the mechanism operates smoothly and without any excessive force or strength.
